Stem Cell Therapy Showing Promise at Dysautonomia Treatment Centers

Researchers at the University of Oklahoma have found that antibodies formed against certain receptors on nerve cells is a factor that causes POTS symptoms to occur. And since POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) is a type of dysautonomia, finding that these antibodies are linked to the occurrence of POTS provide help with treatment and possibly prevent dysautonomia in general.  Essentially, the presence of these antibodies indicates that dysautonomia is actually related to an autoimmune response in the body. And since stem cells are being used to treat a variety of autoimmune conditions, they show potential as a good alternative to IVIG (gamma globulin), with as good or better results without the side effects of IVIG.

Specifically, mesenchymal stem cell therapy (MSC) has already shown promise as a therapy for MSA (Multiple System Atrophy-another form of dysautonomia), delaying the progression of the disease.  Recently, it has been found that MSC treatment modulates cortical thickness in patients with MSA, which, the authors infer, may also help with cognitive disorders.  Stem cell treatments of this type are being offered in terms of an IRB-approved study for around $6,000 and typically not covered by insurance at this time.

Still, as always and most importantly, before embarking on any treatment plan, it’s best to visit a top-notch dysautonomia clinic and let a specialist determine if you do, in fact, have dysautonomia or some other condition. It makes no sense to start a treatment plan if you’re not 100% certain of what is going on.  And for any significant diagnosis like dysautonomia or similar conditions, it’s always best to get a second opinion.

Getting that good second (or first) opinion is very easy if you simply choose a reputable dysautonomia treatment center with doctors that have sufficient experience and current knowledge. Dr. Paula Moore and Dr. Susan Phillip have a combined experience of over 40 years with dysautonomia, so you can rest assured they will be able to help you get better, in the fastest possible way. Understanding Dysautonomia: It’s a Broad Term Covering Varying Autonomic Dysfunctions

The first thing to understand about dysautonomia is that the term ‘dysautonomia’ is a more general term includes various dysfunctions of the autonomic nervous system, which can include POTS, neural-mediated hypotension, pure autonomic failure and others.  Patients can have only one of these conditions or, more commonly, have several of these conditions at the same time.

And, these conditions can be related to other medical conditions like as diabetes mellitus, kidney or  hypothalamus malfunctions causing electrolyte imbalances that lead to autonomic dysfunctions and so forth.  The point is that, if you have dysautonomia, one of the big keys to getting better is to see a specialist that can point out which of the other conditions under dysautonomia are present. Getting more specific as to what part of the autonomic nervous system is malfunctioning can lead much more quickly to getting to the bottom of what is really causing the problems. And that means you’re a lot closer to doing the right things and getting better, instead of just generally being treated for dysautonomia.

It’s a bit like saying there’s something wrong with fluid system in a car—you really need to know if it’s the radiator, water pump, a thermostat, or something electrical, etc to be able to fix or at least improve the problem.  So, your best bet is to look for a dysautonomia doctor that can help you get specific as to whether it’s POTS or some other condition under the umbrella of dysautonomia--and come up with a specific treatment plan that works.

Even better, set up an appointment at Dysautonomia-MVP Center, LLC, a Birmingham, AL-based dysautonomia treatment center with world-class doctors that can quickly help you figure out specifically what is going on so you can get better-now.  We offer flexible appointments, natural treatment options where applicable, and we always do our best to make sure that our patients receive the very best care, going the extra whenever necessary.
